The Unbroken StoneÂ
NEW MEDIA WORKSHOP SUMMER CAMP 2025
The Unbroken StoneÂ
"The Unbroken Stone No. 1-6, explores the vital significance of natural resources in our modern era, reflecting on the processes of extraction and consumption and their implications for both present and future generations. Each panel draws inspiration from natural stones and rock formations, stemming from personal experiences such as travels to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil or browsing jewelry at local businesses in São Paulo.
The value of these stones lies not solely in their transformation by human hands into desired objects of consumption, but rather in their inherent beauty when observed in their natural state. Why must we alter nature to satisfy our selfish desires? Nature thrives without our intervention; it is our duty to appreciate the abundance it generously bestows upon us.
Working in NFTs, VR, generative media and performance art, Brazilian artist Johab Silva explores environmental issues, time and chance, and the fabrication, consumption, and collection of digital media. Silva holds an MFA from Maine College of Art & Design and a Graduate degree in Arts in Education from the Corcoran College of Art & Design, and he is a Lecturer of Art & Immersive Media Design at University of Maryland. Silva lives in Reston, Virginia and is a current artist in residence at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington.
The Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with Metro's Art in Transit program and the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, is pleased to share local artist Johab Silva's captivating artwork with the community. Silva's artwork adorns the construction barricade of the Rosslyn station, serving as a vibrant enhancement during the escalator replacement work.
Supported by Rosslyn City Center and American Real Estate Partners, this temporary project at the Rosslyn Metro station is turning a functional construction site into a canvas for local artistic expression."
